Diddlebury

William's wife describes herself as Susan of Susanna on different census returns. By comparing these returns I have found out that they had a total of 15 children.

Their first son John (1) seems to have been born the year before his parents married circa 1833. At the time of the 1851 Census he is living with his parents at Fernhall's Mill, Diddlebury. By the time of the 1881 Census he is lving at Farmcote, Claverley, Shropshire with his wife Ellen and seven children: George born 1862, Emma born 1867, Frank born 1869, Sarah born 1873, Henery born 1875, Ann in 1877 and Mary in 1879. In all likelihood they will have had one or two more children.

Their second George (2) is our great grandfather. Please got to the next page to find out more about him.

Their first daughter Sarah (3) was baptised at Diddlebury on the 12th February 1837. She is living at home at the time of the 1841 and 1851 Census Returns, but by 1871 she is working as a domestic servant and cook at Aldon Court Farm, Stokesay.

Their fourth son Thomas (5) was baptised at Diddlebury on the 27th October 1839. He is living at home at the time of the 1841, 51 and 61 Census Returns, then marries Ruth at Bewdley, Worcestershire circa 1868. He is still living at Hightreebank in 1901 as working as a general labourer.

Sixth son James (7) was baptised at Diddlebury on the 20th November 1842. He is living with his parents at Aston Munslow at the time of the 1851 Census and at Culmington with his widowed mother at the time of the 1871 Census. By 1881 he is working as a groom/domestic servant and living at Silk Mill Lane, Ludlow St Lawrence. He is now married to Emma and has four young children Susan A born in 1875, James W born in 1877, John Thomas born in 1878 and George Henry born 1879 all born at Silk Mill Lane. By the time of the 1901 Census he is now a coachman (not domestic) and living st 80, Upper Goalford, Ludlow St Lawrence, and has another child Earnest John born in 1882.

Their second daughter Marianne (8) was baptised at Diddlebury on the 5th May 1844. she is listed with her parents at the time of the 1851 Census at Aston Munslow and again at the time of the 1861 Census at Coppice Barn. No trace after this.

Ninth son Walter (13) was born circa 1856 at Munslow. At the time of the 1861 Cenuss he is living with his parents at Coppice Barn. By 1881 he is a farm labourer living at Hungerford Eaton and in 1901 is an abricultural labourer lodging at the Butcher's Arms, Munslow.

Fifth daughter Helen (14) was born circa 1858 at Aston in Munslow. She is living with her parents at Coppice Barn, Diddlebury at the time of the 1861 Census. Later at the time of the 1881 Census she is working as a domestic servant at Heath Bank. Mossley Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire for a family by the name of Thompson.

Tenth son Henry (15) was born circa 1859 at Aston in Munslow. He is living with his parents at Coppice Barn, Diddlebury at the time of the 1861 census, but there is no trace of him after this date.

I am pretty sure that William and Susanna didn't have any more children after Henry and it would be unlikely since Susanna was 44 when she had Henry.
